Talking to your (grand)kids about Pride
As LGBT+ parents and grandparents, we know that talking to kids about LGBTQ+ issues and Pride can be tricky - particularly given that when we were their age, being LGBTQ+ was often something shameful and not for discussion at the dinner table…
Families and children are welcome at Millport Pride - come and wave a flag in the parade, explore the stalls and soak up the atmosphere as we gather for our first ever Pride! Cumbrae Youth Project will have a dedicated youth zone for 12- 25s on the day with activities supported by NAC Youth Work and a separate family space for under 12s in the Town Hall.
There are some fantastic books available to introduce children to LGBT+ issues and to Pride specifically in an age-appropriate context.
Hhere are some suggested resources to help: ABC Pride by Dr Elly Barnes MBE and Louie Stowell | Gay's The Word - a lovely book suitable for pre school or early primary Tips For Celebrating Pride With Kids (And Why It's Important!) - https://www.bbc.co.uk/tiny-happy-people/articles/z37sp4j https://youtu.be/lwGF5WMDDrQ?feature=shared - Twinkl video explaining the history and purpose of Pride, for older children.
